Have you ever made your own napkins? I can never find what I’m looking for, so now I make my own. How many of you have only used cloth napkins as decorations? I’ve been guilty of this too! After I got married, I began using cloth napkins instead of paper towels. I love the fact that I can pick fun fabrics to create napkins that accent my table.
Learning to sew cloth napkins was one of my first solo projects. The sewing machine I use is the Singer Simple 3232. I got my very first serger this year, the Brother Serger 1034D, and I was able to use it for this project. Although the use of a serger isn’t a requirement to sew your napkins, this tutorial includes the use of one. This is an excellent beginner project because it requires you to sew four straight lines on a simple sewing machine.
Materials Needed
- Fabric
- Wonder clips or pins
- Sliding marker sewing gauge
- Basic sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Ruler
- Serger (optional)
Instructions
- Iron the fabric.
- Trim off the selvage from your fabric.
- Decide on the final napkin measurement and add one inch. As an example, if sewing 18-inch napkins, cut the square at 19 inches to allow for a 1/2 seam on each side.
- Serge all four sides of each napkin and trim off the excess thread tails.
- Use wonder clips and a sliding marker sewing gauge to clip (pin) your napkins at a 1/2 inch.
- Sew a 1/2 inch seam on all sides of the napkin. Trim the thread tails at the end.
- Iron the napkins to remove any creases.
