Growing up I was accustomed to having sauce from a jar. The first time I experienced fresh tomato sauce I couldn’t believe the difference in taste! I’ll be honest, it was intimidating to think about skinning a tomato on my own. My husband taught me just how easy it is to skin a tomato. To learn more, follow the steps below.
Steps
- In a large stockpot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil.
- Fill a medium size bowl with ice water.
- Wash and dry the tomatoes.
- Put the stem side down on the cutting board.
- Using a sharp pairing knife, gently score the tomatoes by making a small x on the bottom.
- Add the tomato to boiling water for approximately 60 seconds, until the skin starts to come free from the flesh of the tomato.
- Take a slotted spoon and remove the tomato to ice water for about 30 seconds.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove it from the ice water.
- Pull the skin away from the tomato.
